Submitter Biography:
The first Brazilian director to join the Directors Guild of America, Flavia Moraes has won awards at the main international film festivals such as Cannes, Clio Awards, The New York Festival and FIAP, as well as winning the Caboré Award three times in Brazil. With her first fiction feature, BEIJO ARDENTE (1984), the director won the Popular Vote award at FestRio and Best Video at FestVídeoBrasil/MIS. In 1990, she set up Filmplanet, a benchmark production company from the golden age of Brazilian advertising, with a remarkable track record in the national and international market, with operations in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. In addition to an impressive number of advertising films, Flavia Moraes has directed music videos, DVDs and concerts, such as FOUR SEASONS (Sandy & Junior), 30 YEARS OF COURAGE (Chitãozinho & Xororó), CARTOLA PARA TODOS, NEGALORA (Claudia Leitte), as well as the opening shows at Rock'nRio in 2001 and 2011. On stage, she has also directed QUEDATE CONMIGO ESTA NOCHE, the Buenos Aires staging of Flavio de Souza's award-winning text, a critic and public success in Buenos Aires, as well as the medium-length film "Gypsy Passion", which is part of Lauro Cesar Muniz's theatrical show "Moonlight in White and Black". For television, Flavia Moraes innovated the independent production model by directing and producing the mini-series TO FRITO (MTV, Band) and GALERA ANIMAL (TVGlobo), developed for Nestlé, which inaugurated the concept of branded content on Brazilian TV, directed "A Teu Lado Leve", a chapter in the series FRONTERAS, produced by Argentinian director Juan Campanella for TNT, and documentaries such as SOU MENINO DO MORUMBI and DALAI LAMA NO BRASIL. For the cinema, she directed a trilogy of films based on the work of writer Luis Fernando Veríssimo, the feature film ACQUARIA, and the episode that represented Brazil in the film WORLD CHAMPION STORIES, about soccer culture in World Cup-winning countries, called A REGRA DO JOGO. More recently, as Director of Innovation at the Grupo RBS, she led an extensive study on the future of communication: THE COMMUNICATION REVOLUTION, which brought together scholars and academics from the world's leading universities, and which guided the repositioning of important vehicles in the group, as well as inspiring Flavia to create and develop the experimental channel OCTO, which tested new formats and standards, focusing on branded content, collaborative content and real-time marketing. Based in Los Angeles since 2016, the director currently dedicates herself to authorial projects whose purpose inspires transformation and other ways of looking. Her most recent film, the award-winning VISIONS IN THE DARK, is thrilling audiences and generating great anticipation for her new documentary MILTON BITUCA NASCIMENTO, which premiered in 2025.
